Dr. Timur Şahin is a Professor of Physics at the Department of Space Sciences and Technologies, Faculty of Science, Akdeniz University. After completing his undergraduate studies in the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at Istanbul University, Şahin earned his master's degree from the Department of Physics at Akdeniz University and his Ph.D. from Queen’s University Belfast (UK), ranked 199th in the 2026 World University Rankings. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin (ranked 68th globally in 2026) before commencing his current position at Akdeniz University.

In 2012, he founded Turkey’s first fundamental sciences research laboratory staffed by undergraduate students: the High-Resolution Stellar Spectroscopy (HRSS) Fundamental Sciences Research Laboratory. Recognized in the international astronomy community for his original work on high-resolution spectroscopy of hot/cold stars and Galactic origins of metal-poor stars in the solar neighborhood, Şahin possesses extensive observational experience with major-class telescopes including the 6.0 m BTA Telescope (Russia), 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope (Australia), and the 2.7 m Harlan J. Smith/2.1 m Otto Struve Telescopes (McDonald Observatory, USA). He has also contributed to significant projects at prestigious research centers such as Armagh Observatory (Northern Ireland, United Kingdom) and McDonald Observatory. In academic leadership, he has served as principal investigator and researcher on numerous TÜBİTAK-funded projects and contributed to strategic academic planning and international collaboration through roles including membership on the TÜBİTAK Bilim Genç Advisory Board, Akdeniz University Erasmus Program Coordination, scientific committee memberships, and Rectorate Advisory. He actively supports the scientific publishing ecosystem through editorial work, peer review, and project evaluation.

Beyond teaching spectroscopy, stellar atmospheres, galactic structure, and nuclear astrophysics at undergraduate/graduate levels, Şahin has pioneered the development of original courses he personally designed: “Infrared Spectroscopy and Applications” and “Spectroscopic Applications in Astrophysics” – enriching curricula and training new-generation astronomers. He advises multiple MSc/PhD theses. The HRSS Laboratory he founded conducts research with active undergraduate/graduate student participation, generates successful TÜBİTAK 1001 projects, and provides spectroscopic analysis/TÜBİTAK proposal preparation services as a registered facility in the Ministry of Industry and Technology’s Laboratory and Research Infrastructure Information System (LABS). Projects at HRSS enhance academic/research skills while contributing to international literature through spectral line lists, analysis methods, and open-source software for stellar spectroscopy, kinematics, and orbital dynamics. Supported by TÜBİTAK funding, HRSS operates under Akdeniz University’s Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences with goals of scientific productivity, training competitive researchers, and international visibility.

A landmark achievement is the atomic line list published in the Astrophysical Journal (December 2024) for the infrared-sensitive DIRAC camera/spectrograph on Türkiye’s 4-meter DAG telescope – a critical step toward establishing Türkiye’s international leadership in astrophotonics. This work aims to inspire spectroscopy laboratories nationwide and accelerate domestic astrophotonics research. HRSS also contributed to the Istanbul-National Space Industry Committee’s (MUEK) Space Technologies Taxonomy Study in the domains of Space Environment & Effects, Space Sciences & Astronomy, Deep Space Exploration, and Education & Human Resources. Specifically, it helped define sub-domains under Education & Human Resources: “Multidisciplinary (Fundamental & Engineering Sciences) Expert HR Applied Training” and “Professional 3D Simulation & Simulator Technologies for Education”, demonstrating voluntary commitment to this mission.

Şahin frequently serves as invited speaker, session chair, and scientific committee member at national/international events, exemplifying scientific excellence and communication. His curiosity extends beyond the cosmos through a deep interdisciplinary interest in archaeology, particularly underwater archaeology and geology.
