Abstract

Since the emergence of civilizations throughout historical processes, the public economy has always been one of the most crucial elements of governance in societies with state organization. Indeed, almost every factor defining a ‘strong’ state – such as the welfare of its citizens, military power, and even levels of freedom – arises as an outcome of effective and stable economic management. In this context, the determination of financial administration and the officials responsible for or tasked with this role have occupied high-ranking positions in every stage of civilization. This study examines the emergence of the tameion office, responsible for financial administration in ancient Greek city-states, beginning with the earliest references that provide information on the subject. In this context, an etymological approach is first adopted to analyze the appearance and meaning of the term tamiai in Homeric texts, and its subsequent evolution during the Archaic and Classical periods to encompass treasurers. The core of the study focuses on the historical development of the tamiai who held this position throughout the Hellenistic Period. Additionally, the study undertakes a comparative analysis with a parallel developmental process in the Roman Republic, particularly evaluating the similarities and differences in the role of the quaestors.
