Özet

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) blood culture isolates in Akdeniz University Hospital over a 5-year period. Material and Methods: A total of 84 MRSA strains isolated from blood cultures between 2007 and 2011 at Akdeniz University Hospital Microbiology Laboratory were included in the study. Vancomycin MIC testing of the isolates was performed using E test method according to the manufacturer's instructions. The mean MIC and geometric mean MIC were calculated for each year and the differences between years were analyzed with SPSS (version 16.0) one-way analysis of variation (ANOVA) and the test of linearity. Results: Among 84 MRSA isolates including 31 isolates in 2007, 15 isolates in 2008, 21 isolates in 2009, 10 isolates in 2001 and 7 isolates in 2011, for 68, eight, five, two and one isolates, respectively, vancomycin MICs were 1 μg/ml, 1.5 μg/ml, 0.75 μg/ml, 0.5 μg/mL and 0.19 μg/ml, respectively. In 2011, for three of the seven isolates vancomycin MIC was 1.5 μg/ml. The vancomycin MIC modes remained fixed through the period from 2007 to 2010, as being 1 μg/mL and varied to 1 μg/mL and 1.5 μg/mL in 2011. When compared with each other, there were no significant differences between the years for the mean MICs (p=0.058), but the trend in increase in the vancomycin mean MIC over years was found to be significant (p=0.010). Conclusion: As a significant tendency toward increasing vancomycin mean MIC over years has been demonstrated, we should be aware of the decrease in vancomycin susceptibility in MRSA clinical isolates in our institution. © 2013 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
