Studies on Examples of Graphic Notation in George Crumb's Makrokosmos Albums for Solo Piano

Abstract

Our research focuses on the first two albums titled “Twelve Fantasy Pieces after the Zodiac for Amplified Piano”. These albums, which feature themes such as Space, Time, Religion and Mystery, are characterized by their use of Amplified Piano techniques and examples of Graphic Notation. The universe of the study consists of Crumb's “Makrokosmos” albums, while the sample consists of six examples of Graphic Notation found here. In this study, which uses a qualitative research method and a cross-sectional research design, a content analysis of the note materials was conducted. The study investigated which contemporary piano performance techniques are used in the works, and identified which thematic group is dominant in the albums. Practical advice was given to performers on understanding and deciphering the six examples of Graphic Notation found in the work. The study, which aimed to facilitate the deciphering and performance of pictorial partitions, also drew on the researcher's stage experience.
Amerikalı besteci George Crumb’un “Makrokosmos” albümler serisi Amplified Piano tekniğinin en ünlü eserlerinden sayılmaktadır. İçerdiği farklı ses efektleri nedeniyle tüm dünyadan piyanistlerin ilgi duyduğu bu eserlerde Grafik Notasyon örnekleri özellikle dikkat çekmektedir. Araştırmamız “Twelve Fantasy Pieces after the Zodiac for Amplified Piano” başlıklı ilk iki albüm üzerine yoğunlaşmaktadır. Uzay, Zaman, Din ve Gizem gibi konuların yer aldığı bu iki albümün özelliği Amplified Piano teknikleri ile beraber Grafik Notasyon örnekleri içermesidir. Araştırmanın evrenini Crumb’un “Makrokosmos” albümleri, örneklemini ise burada bulunan altı Grafik Notasyon örneği teşkil etmektedir. Nitel araştırma yöntemi ve kesitsel araştırma deseni kullanılan çalışmada bulunan nota materyallerinin içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Eserlerde hangi çağdaş piyano icra tekniklerinin ve nasıl kullanıldığı araştırılmış, albümlerde hangi tematik grubun baskın olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İcracılara eserde bulunan altı Grafik Notasyon örneğinin anlaşılması ve deşifresi konusunda pratik tavsiyeler verilmiştir. Resimsel partisyonların deşifresinin ve icrasının kolaylaştırılmasını amaçlayan çalışmada araştırmacının sahne deneyiminden de yararlanılmıştır.
