Abstract

Two young ostriches, aged four and six months, that had shown inappetance, weight loss, exercise intolerance, lethargy, and dehydration followed by constipation, were found, at necropsy, to have impaction in the proventriculus and ventriculus. In bird 1 the gizzard was extremely impacted by solid masses of Lucerne hay mixed with fine sand and two bottle lids. In bird 2 the proventriculus and especially the ventriculus were full of masses of hardened fine sand, pieces of rocks (some up to 7cm long and 3cm wide), and a small amount of Lucerne hay.
