Özet

One of the more curious parts of the road list on the Stadiasmos of Patara (SP) is that the three regions on the provincial borders are mentioned in the road list. Oktapolis in the west, Milyas in the north and Mnarike in the east, along with specific cities associated with them: Lyrnai, Kodopa and Kosara. Several ideas have been proposed to explain why these three regions with specific towns were shown on the SP. However, these ideas did not produce a satisfactory result. This question has been re-opened by a re-evaluation of the relevant epigraphic material, the most important of which are those newly found in the region of Oktapolis, together with a comparative assessment of the literary sources. The paper attempts to shed some light on the possible origins of the creation of these regions, which may have been linked to Roman initiatives, especially after the Mithradatic Wars.
