Abstract

In this study, cost efficiency of aluminum material investigated for the optimum design of single layer geodesic dome structures problem.  Firefly Algorithm (FA) has been utilized for solving this optimization problem. Cross-sectional designations of members, the height of the crown and number of rings are treated as design variables of the optimization problem. Design constraints of the optimization problem, including the displacement limitations, strength and serviceability requirements, for the dome members are derived from Aluminum Design Manual  (The Aluminum Association, 2000).  20m span geodesic dome is selected as design example in this study. This dome is optimized using both steel and aluminum structures in order to test cost efficiency of aluminum material.  In addition, obtained optimum design results of the FA algorithm are compared to literature study’s results (Saka, 2007a) in order to test performance of the FA algorithm.
