Sustainable use of resources has become more crucial due to increasing global demand for energy. Coal's share of total world energy supply has increased from 24.5% to 28.6% between 1973 and 2014, whereas the share of coal in electricity generation in Turkey was around 29% in 2015. Turkey has relatively rich lignite deposits. However, lignite deposits of Turkey have low calorific value, high contents of ash, and total sulphur and contain significant trace elements which pose adverse health and environmental affects during combustion of coal. Many health problems such as arsenism, fluorosis that are associated with coal combustion have been reported. Due to environmental and public health problems, cleaner coal technologies have attracted a world wide attention.
