Abstract
Objective: Because of nurses’ influence on patient safety and health outcomes, nurse turnover and to leave
intention from profession have received considerable attention worldwide. Turnover and to leave intention
from profession seem to be affected by a number of variables. This study was conducted to examine the
relationship organizational commitment, professional self and individual characteristics of nurses' intention
to leave the profession.
Materials-Methods: This study that was designed as a descriptive research and this study consisted of 153
nurses who work at a state hospital. The data were collected with the “Sociodemographic Questionnaire”,
Organizational Commitment Scale" and "Professional Self-Concept Scale. The data were evaluated using
descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis.
Results: The mean age of the nurses was 34.76±6.88, the average years of work 13.90±7.81 and the
average years of work in the hospital at this time was 6.45 ± 5.69 years. 39.2 % of the nurses intended to
leave their profession. Nurses' organizational commitment mean score (Factor 1=3.72 ± 1.23, Factor
2=3.87 ± 1.13) was low, professional self (107.84 ± 11.94) mean score was above average. According to
the logistic regression analysis, the intention to leave from the profession of nurses’ has affected by
organization commitment, education, gender, working time available in the hospital, looking forward to the
training plan and association membership status (B=-.438, SE=.166, W=7.00, df=1, p=0.008).
Conclusion: More than one-third of nurses have been consider leaving the profession. The intention to leave
the profession of nurses' affects features such as education, gender, working time available in the hospital
and organizational commitment.
