Abstract

Vermicompost is an organic fertilizer that is produced by composting process in which earthworms are used. It is known that vermicompost promotes plant growth. Scientific studies reveal that vermicompost has an ability to suppress soil-born plant pathogens and improve soil physical and chemical properties. Since 1970’s, vermicompost has been known to have a potential in agricultural production and widely used in several countries. In Turkey, however, vermicompost is almost unknown to agricultural professionals and its production and use is highly limited. The objective of this review is to provide interested individuals with basic information regarding vermicompost and its effects on soil physical and chemical properties, plant growth and yield.
