XIX. century's economic history
was determined with the British Industrial Revolution and its politics and
ideology by the French Revolution. One of the important possibilities of this
process is railways. The railway revolution in Western Europe becomes the main
tool that enables the transition of economic and social organization from
agricultural to industrial. However, in this period, the Ottoman Empire did not
have the technological and economic infrastructure to build the new
transportation system. The construction and operation of the railway is given
to foreign companies as a concession. For example, the first railway of Anatolia is built by a British company
between İzmir and Aydın. The line was later extended to Keçiborlu for sulfur
mine, Baladiz for rose oil, Kuleönü for carpet and Eğirdir for seafood. The
construction of the line took 6 years and the railway reached Eğirdir in 1912.
In this period, the development of railway activities by giving concessions to
foreign companies prevented the formation of an integrated line structure in
Anatolia. Tree-type line structure was formed from the ports in the coastal
areas to the market and production
areas in the interior. This type is not suitable for business administration.
For this reason, the Isparta- Egirdir line, which lost its importance in the
Republican period, has completely lost its importance since the 1980s and has
been closed for use. The line between Eğirdir and Isparta city center, which has
an important tourism potential today, is suitable for organizing nostalgic
steam train services. Kuleönü and Eğirdir stations, which are out of use on the
line, are remarkable in terms of reuse for tourism purposes. In this study, the Isparta-Egirdir railway
line and the idle building stock will be evaluated in terms of tourism
potential and sustainability, and usage suggestions will be developed.
