Abstract

Archaeological predictive models are used to identify potential places having archaeological sites within a certain region. They are increasingly used in the field of cultural heritage management and academic field research. Using predictive models as an analytical tool to describe settlement patterns and past human behavior increases the interest in digital archaeology. Archaeological sites have geographically and socially complex features, so complex decision-making problems are encounter in preparing archaeological predictive models. Mathematical methods are essential to perform these complex analyses that exceed the interpretive power of the human brain. Using multi-criteria decision analysis and GIS techniques provides a great advantage for complex analysis. Fuzzy logic, one of the multi-criteria decision analysis methods, is used securely through its strong mathematical infrastructure based on the decisions of experts. In this study, an archaeological predicting map with the fuzzy logic method was created for the central district of Sivas province in Turkey, with reference to the Iron Age site characteristics.
