Compositions in FTC series aiming for the formation of 5 to 35 vol pct TiC in Fe were prepared. In addition, samples in Fe + Ti (FT) system were produced via VCS, by using the same amounts of Fe and Ti as in the FTC system. Experiments were conducted by heating the loose reactant pellets by induction at a rate of about 1000 °C/min. Ignition temperatures were found to be in 1185 °C to 1235 °C range in both systems. Thus, the same ignition mechanism, through the formation of FeTi + Ti eutectic liquid, was proposed for both systems. Samples having TiC content below 30 vol pct could not be ignited. The average sizes of the formed TiC particles were found to be in 0.5 to 0.7 µm range. Microhardness values of the composites increased with increasing TiC contents and reached 550 HV0.2 at 35 vol pct TiC. Reaction paths were proposed for both systems. The presence of Fe3C in the samples in which ignition did not occur, and the presence of Fe2Ti in the reaction products were discussed according to free energy calculations and diffusion coefficients.
