Konyaaltı Beach is one of Antalya’s world-famous
beaches. During scuba diving conducted on May 24, 2025, a gastropod species
with hair-like structures on its shell was identified under an high density
polyethylene (HDPE) pipe that carries seawater from the sea to an aquarium on
land. This gastropod was collected and brought to the laboratory of the Faculty
of Fisheries at Akdeniz University. In the laboratory, some biometric
measurements of the shell were taken, and the species was identified as Monoplex
parthenopeus (Salis Marschlins, 1793). Monoplex parthenopeus had
previously been reported for the first time along Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast
in the Gulf of Antalya, approximately 20 km from this location. With this
study, the presence of the species on the Turkish Mediterranean coast is being
reported for the second time. Belonging to the family Cymatiidae and known as
the giant or hairy triton, M. parthenopeus is a gastropod species
distributed in the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The fact that this species
has now been reported in two nearby locations in the Gulf of Antalya around the
same period raises the possibility that global warming may be playing a role.
