Özet

Objective: We planned this study to evaluate the level of knowledge about breast cancer and diagnostic methods in women at 18-65 years of age who applied to a training and research hospital in a city center for an ordinary health problem. Material and Method: A questionnaire consisting of 40 questions regarding sociodemographic features, risk factors for breast cancer, symptoms and diagnostic methods of breast cancer were applied to 511 women between November and December 2006. Results: According to this study, 47% of the women explained that they have a general knowledge of breast cancer. Women with high mean points of knowledge were performing breast self examination and had knowledge about mammography. Their main source of information about these methods was health personnel. The women with high knowledge points were visiting a doctor at least once a year. The rate of never visiting a doctor was 37.4%. In the group, 40% had no knowledge about breast examination, and 37.9% have no knowledge about mammography. Conclusion: The knowledge about breast cancer, breast self examination and mammography is low among women who applied to outpatient clinics. The health personnel was found as the most reliable source of mammography and breast cancer. The health personnel together with educational societies should perform training and screening program to make women conscious of early diagnosis and methods of examination for breast cancer.
