Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (ZFC) is frequently recognized as “the most common foundation of mathematics”. Traditionally, ZFC has been formulated and studied within the confines of first-order logic. That is, ZFC in its widely accepted form is a first-order theory. However, since the 1970s, an increasing number of philosophers of logic and set theorists, for various reasons, have advocated for the necessity of a stronger theory to study sets and the foundations of mathematics. In this framework, the most frequently voiced proposal to date has been to adopt a formulation of ZFC in the language of second-order logic. Yet, in such a formulation, ZFC becomes a class-set theory rather than a pure set theory. In this context, an alternative approach frequently discussed in recent years is to study and even synthesize set theory with plural logic. It is anticipated that a set theory formulated with plural logic would both provide the advantages of second-order ZFC and achieve this without becoming a class-set theory. This study introduces the reasons for the growing demand for higher-order set theories in the contemporary literature of philosophical set theory, the motivations behind the proposal to study set theory with plural logic, the various obstacles to such a synthesis, the different strategies developed to resolve these issues, and their philosophical justifications. Additionally, it presents a brief critique of these strategies.
