Özet

Effect of an external magnetic field (H) on the sound attenuation coefficient (alpha) in a spin-1 Ising system containing biquadratic interaction is investigated using the lowest approximation of the cluster variation method and the Onsager theory. Field variation of the attenuation coefficient has been studied for different values of frequency and temperature. It is found that a quadratic field dependence of alpha on H appears in the low-field region while it reaches to a maximum at a certain magnetic field and decreases as the field increases in the high-field region. A qualitative comparison between these results and the results of ultrasonic studies in the rare-earth metals, heavy fermion superconductors, and inorganic spin-Pearls compounds is presented. Good agreement is achieved. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
