CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates, through the example of The Social Dilemma, that film posters are not merely promotional materials but active paratexts that stimulate the production of meaning, emotions, and expectations before viewers encounter the main text. The findings indicate that participants interpreted the poster’s red color, strings, smartphone, the character’s bodily position, and color contrasts in terms of danger, chaos, addiction, control, restriction, and a sense of entrapment. In this respect, audience reception substantially overlaps with the discourse of vulnerability, manipulation, and control identified in Liang and Lim’s (2024) social semiotic analysis.

However, the study also demonstrates that meanings identified through semiotic analysis are not entirely identical to those constructed by viewers. Participants did not merely decode visual signs; they associated them with their own digital experiences, constructed cause-and-effect narratives from a single static image, and sometimes questioned the poster’s dramatic discourse. In particular, participants’ acceptance of social media’s potential for addiction and control, despite considering the representation “surreal” or excessively dramatized, suggests that viewers are not passive recipients of meaning in their engagement with visual texts. This finding is consistent with Hall’s (1980) concept of negotiated reading.

The study’s principal contribution lies in this distinction. While Liang and Lim (2024) identify the meanings produced by The Social Dilemma poster through social semiotic analysis, the present study reveals how these meanings are received by actual viewers. The findings indicate that meanings encoded in visual texts may resonate with audiences, yet they can also be expanded, transformed, or negotiated through personal experience, awareness, and critical evaluation during the reception process. This finding supports approaches that conceptualize paratext not as a fixed threshold that determines meaning, but as a dynamic space in which meaning emerges through interaction with viewers before their encounter with the main text (Genette, 1997; Gray, 2010).

In conclusion, evaluating the effectiveness of film posters solely in terms of design, aesthetics, or marketing success is insufficient. Posters constitute an initial point of contact where viewers interpret visual signs, develop emotional responses, construct potential narratives, form expectations about the main text, and either accept or negotiate the meanings presented to them. Therefore, combining text-centered semiotic analyses with audience-centered reception data in film poster research can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the meanings potentially embedded in a visual text and those actually constructed by viewers.
