Approaches of Measuring TPACK of English Instructors

Abstract

In this research, we presented a review of literature as to various techniques of measuring TPACK of English instructors. To ensure that this literature review provided an exhaustive overview of a wide range of TPACK measures, we conducted literature searches in ERIC Education, EBSCOhost, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science (WOS), SpringerLink, Taylor & Francis, and Google Scholar online databases using the keywords “technological pedagogical content knowledge,” “TPACK,” “TPCK”, and “English instructors.” Additionally, we covered grey literature in our search to decrease the impact of a potential publication bias. We also reviewed other types of publications, including existing conference papers, dissertations, and unpublished manuscripts. In consequence of our search process, a total of 85 articles were specified after the duplicates were removed. We then evaluated each study based on the following criteria: a) study used TPACK measures; b) study written in English and Turkish; c) study published between 2008 and 2018. Out of 85 articles we identified, a total of 40 studies met our inclusion criteria. In order to ensure the robustness of the coding scheme, a random sample of 12 studies (of the 40 total) were coded blindly by each researcher. To meet the inter-reliability of coding, each of the blind coded studies was analyzed through SPSS program package. As a result of the analysis, the reliability level was found to be .83. The other studies were then coded independently by the researchers. The findings revealed that notably, five types of TPACK measures of English instructors were used across studies, namely self-report measures, open-ended questionnaires, performance assessments, interviews, and observations.
