Genetic diversity provides an economic basis for
protecting and conserving biodiversity. The identification and conservation of
the current genetic diversity of chicken pure lines in Turkey are necessary not
only to provide for today’s demand for production, but also to respond to
prospective breeding programmes in the future.
In Turkey, four commercial brown layer lines (Rhode
Island Red I, Rhode Island Red II, Barred Rock I, Barred Rock II) and four commercial
white layer lines (Black Line, Brown Line, Blue Line, Maroon Line) were
imported from Canada in 1995 and were used in selection studies based on various
characteristics. In this study, a total of 200 chickens from these eight
commercial layer lines reared in Ankara Poultry Research Station were genotyped
by using microsatellite markers. The results obtained in this study showed that
there was high level of inbreeding among chicken lines studied. There was not
significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the lines. According to discriminant analyses, the chicken lines
studied were divided into 2 main groups. Our results will provide reliable
basic information for the future studies about Marker Assisted Selection
program of Turkish commercial pure chicken lines and of domestic chickens.
