Abstract

Although the Patara Nero Baths exhibits for Lycia a typical appearance in its plan features, it is striking with its monumental gate built inside the frigidarium and providing the entrance to the tepidarium. The traces on the stylobate blocks and the data obtained from the excavation show that this unique door in the frigidarium had a magnificent façade with four columns and an entrance on each side. Based on the archaeological data, three different restitution proposals were made regarding the architecture of the door. The first of these is that the inter-columns are closed only up to the top of the columns; the second, that the inter-columns are completely closed; and the third, that the door has two columns on the facade and pilasters at the corners. It is thought that the tepidarium gate, which forms the subject of this article, as a result of the architectural details and the data obtained from the excavation finds, can be dated to the Severan period.
