Abstract

Gecekondu areas in Turkey have emerged in 1940s with the immigration of people from rural to the city for different reasons, and after 2000s, due to the increase in the value of the land, some urban interventions and works were initiated under the name of “urban transformation”. The aim of this study is to reveal urban transformation practices that meet the needs and expectations of the citizens and provide sustainable solutions to the cities, based on the urban transformation studies being implemented in the world. As a result of the study, it has been seen that the citizens living in gecekondus, apartments and mass housing have positive and negative evaluations about the areas they live in, and the current urban transformation works are effective in the short term and do not meet the expectations and needs. In order for the works being implemented in the field of urbanism to be effective in the long term, it is necessary to make technical and social infrastructure works, as well as spatial arrangements that take into account the culture and lifestyle of the society. For this reason, it is recommended to consult the opinions of the citizens in future scientific studies and to carry out statistical studies to reveal the needs and expectations of the citizens.
