This study examines the socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors of femicides in Turkey between 2018 and 2023. Data were obtained from the Anıt Sayaç platform, which documents women killed due to gender-based violence, and each case was verified through at least three news sources before being analyzed using document analysis. A total of 2,305 femicides were examined across 7,315 newspaper reports. Findings indicate that women were most often killed by their husbands or former partners, predominantly in their own homes and with firearms. The murders were frequently motivated by arguments, separation attempts, jealousy, or so-called “honor.” In many cases, warning signs such as escalating violence, explicit death threats, and prior physical abuse were present. Media representations were found to employ narratives that may normalize or trivialize femicides. During the pandemic, increased social isolation and the release of convicted offenders further endangered women’s safety. The study concludes that preventing femicides requires the establishment of comprehensive and consistent data collection systems, expansion of educational and economic support, effective enforcement of legal measures, and the promotion of gender equality.
