Abstract

To evaluate the effects of an inhibitor of plasminogen activator to hasten the repair of full-thickness articular cartilage defects, 2 mm diameter osteochondral defects were made in 24 adult rabbits and 18 of the rabbits were treated with tranexamic acid intramuscularly every other day for 2 to 4 weeks. The healing response was examined using routine histology at 2, 4 and 12 weeks intervals. Both the experimental (treated with tranexamic acid) and control (nontreated) defects healed through a fibrovascular reparative tissue that finally modulated into fibrocartilage.
