Abstract

Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of polishing resin-based composites and the use of a home bleaching

agent for the removal of coffee staining on the color stability of restorations.

Material and Methods: Specimens prepared from resin-based composite were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 5) according to

different polishing methods; G1: Control, G2: Identoflex (Kerr), G3: Composoft (EVE), G4: Diapolisher Paste (GC) and G5: Twist

Dia (Kuraray). After the polishing process, initial color measurements were made and then immersed in a coffee solution prepared

with 3.6 grams of filter coffee per 100 ml of water. Samples removed from the coffee solution at the end of 7 days were kept in home

bleaching agent for 8 hours and then in distilled water for 16 hours for 7 days after color measurement. Color measurements were

performed at baseline (T0), 7 days after coffee (T1), and 14 days after bleaching (T2) using a clinical spectrophotometer (VITA

Easyshade) according to the CIELab color system. One-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA), Tukey post-hoc test statistical

analyses were used to evaluate color changes (ΔE) and significance level was set as p ≤ 0.05.

Results: According to the data obtained, G5 (4.75±0.76) showed the lowest ΔE value after coffee soaking (T1) followed by home

bleaching (T2), while G3 (8.87±1.49) was significantly higher than all groups. When the ΔE values measured after baseline (T0) and

home bleaching (T2) were compared, G3 (1.09±0.57) showed the lowest ΔE value, while G1 (3.52±1.4) was significantly higher than

all groups.

Conclusions: The use of a home bleaching agent is an effective method for the removal of discoloration after the use of coffee in

resin-based composites. In addition, the use of a suitable polishing method can have a positive effect on the effectiveness of the home

bleaching agent.
