The study was carried out to understand the formation of soils in the closed depressions on the limestone terrains in Mediterranean Turkey. Although the suggestions below require more definite evidence, in the light of this study it is possible to suggest that the derivation of soil material of the profiles on the travertine complex of Antalya are threefold as follows; 1. Weathering of the travertine and deposition of insoluble residue in the depressions, travertine basins, poljes and on lower slopes. 2. Airborne material; such as volcanic ash from local sources, fine dust originating from the North Africa and loess of silt and fine sand size from the interior of Antalya and from the central Anatolia. 3. Eroded material from slopes of Taurus Mountains. All three materials contribute the soil material in two ways; a) they directly mix with soil material and b) first they were trapped in the travertine complex and then after freed by dissolution. At the present time it is very difficult to suggest precisely what proportion of soil material is originated from travertine weathering and what proportion has been introduced as aeolian dust.
