We aimed to investigate the expression of IGF-IR in prostate cancer and to evaluate their prognostic significance. Between 1999 and 2007, the expression of IGF-IR was investigated by using an immunohistochemical approach in fifty-nine prostate cancer patients who were treated with radiotherapy. Median age was 73 (ranged 56-83) years and median follow up was 48.3 months. Fourty-three patients (73%) were found be IGF-IR positive. Biochemically freedom from relapse free survival was significantly higher in patients with negative stained IGF-IR, age < 70, Gleason score < 8. PSA(0) value <= 20 ng/ml. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that PSA0 value <= 20 ng/ml and PSA2 value <= 0.36 ng/ml were statistically significant predictors of biochemically freedom from relapse free survival. The 4-year overall survival, biochemically freedom from relapse free and distant metastasis free survival were 76%, 80% and 93% respectively. This study demostrated that presence of IGF-IR expression was significantly associated with better biochemically freedom from relapse free survival rates.
