Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Turkey: Sociological Aspects of an International Migration Movement

Özet

Turkey, which is situated on the transit route to Europe for many refugees/asylumseekers from Asia and Africa, has recently been facing a gradually increasingrefugee problem. In this study, a sociological analysis of refugees will be introducedthrough the example of the city of Isparta in Turkey which serves as a transitcountry for many international refugees. The study will attempt to discuss the demo-graphic characteristics of refugees, such as their age, gender, education levels, occu-pations, marital status, number of children, job/occupation and employment status,social and economic status, survival ways, reasons why they became refugees,traumas they experienced, adaptation problems, expectations, and finally theirpoints of view towards both themselves and the world. The source of data used inthe study includes the refugees residing in Kafeler (Bug˘day) Street in the citycentre, as well as the refugees residing in Yedis¸ehitler district of Isparta.
