The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of various presowing treatments and growing media on germination of Dianthus orientalis seeds. Seeds of D. orientalis collected from the wild were used as the experimental material. Three pre-sowing treatments were applied: a) soaking in 0, 10, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/L gibberellic acid (GA3) solution for 24 hour, b) soaking in hot water at 50, 60 and 70 degrees C for 2 minutes, c) storage at 5 or 10 degrees C for 20 or 40 days. After the pre-sowing treatments, seeds were transferred into peat, peat+perlite (1: 1) or perlite media. Results showed that GA(3) treatments increased germination rate of and the highest germination rate was obtained from 2000 mg/L GA(3) applications. Although it was not statistically significant, germination rate of the seeds treated with hot water at 50 degrees C was higher than the control. Storing seeds at 5 or 10 degrees C decreased germination rate as compared with the control treatment. The effect of growing media was statistically significant only in hot water treatment and the highest germination rate was recorded in peat+perlite combination.
