Özet

Growing research on perceived adulthood has shown that perceived adults (PAs) and perceived emerging adults (PEAs) differ on multiple indices of psychosocial well-being. However, it is not known whether PAs and PEAs differ on their friendships and whether friendship experiences relate to subjective well-being (SWB) similarly in the two groups. The current study addressed these issues in a large sample of college students (n = 1,690). Results revealed that PAs and PEAs did not differ from each other on friendship experiences. However, the associations of the friendship variables with SWB were stronger among PAs when compared to PEAs. Also, while the friendship experiences and behaviors accounted for 14% of the variance in SWB in the overall sample, they explained 26% of the variance among PAs and 12% among PEAs. Discussion focuses on why PAs reap more benefits from their friendships compared to PEAs, and suggestions for future research are provided.
