This
study investigated the impact of excessive screen-based media use and
low-quality mother-child interaction on early childhood development.
Twenty-four typically developing preschoolers underwent assessments, including
tests for attention, visual perception, and language skills. Semi-structured
interviews with mothers provided insights into screen media usage and
interaction dynamics. Findings revealed negative effects on attention, visual
perception, and language proficiency in children exposed to excessive screen
media and lacking in quality mother-child engagement, particularly during
infancy. Deficiencies were noted, especially in vocabulary acquisition. These
results underscore the importance of monitoring screen media exposure and
promoting meaningful interactions between mothers and children, especially in
the formative years, for optimal developmental outcomes.
