EVALUATION OF NURSES' VIEWS ON JOB SATISFACTION: A PUBLIC
HOSPITAL EXAMPLE

ABSTRACT
Background: Job satisfaction is a fundamental concept in organizational behavior for explaining how
employees evaluate their work experiences. This concept encompasses not only an individual's
emotional response to their job but also the degree to which the working conditions align with personal
expectations.
Aim: The aim of this research is to evaluate the opinions of nurses working in a public hospital regarding
their job satisfaction and to examine whether these opinions differ according to certain variables.
Methods: This research is a descriptive field study using a survey model. The study population consisted
of nurses (N=500) working at Antalya Kepez State Hospital in Antalya city center. This study utilized
a convenience sampling method, a type of non-probability sampling. Arithmetic means and standard
deviations of total and sub-dimension scores were calculated to determine the job satisfaction levels of
nurses. A two-group t-test was used to examine differences based on descriptive variables, while oneway
analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for variables involving more than two groups.
Results: The overall mean of job satisfaction level was determined as 3.07 (Ss = .72), and it was found
that the participants had a moderate level of job satisfaction. When the sub-dimensions were evaluated,
the mean of the intrinsic satisfaction dimension was calculated as 3.20 (Ss = .74), and the mean of the
extrinsic satisfaction dimension was calculated as 2.90 (Ss = .78). These findings reveal that the
participants' intrinsic satisfaction levels are higher than their extrinsic satisfaction levels. As a result of
the t-test performed according to the smoking variable, the job satisfaction level of nurses who do not
smoke (X̄ = 3.14; Ss = 0.68) was found to be statistically significantly higher than that of those who
smoke (X̄ = 2.91; Ss = 0.78) [t(215) = -2.179; p = .030; Cohen's d = -0.323]. As a result of the t-test
performed according to the variable of wanting to continue the profession, the job satisfaction level of
nurses who want to continue their profession (X̄ = 3.34; Ss = 0.64) was found to be statistically
significantly higher than those who do not want to continue their profession (X̄ = 2.66; Ss = 0.63) [t(215)
= 7.735; p < .001; Cohen's d = 1.071]. As a result of the ANOVA analysis performed according to the
age variable, a statistically significant difference was found between the job satisfaction levels of
different age groups [F(2, 214) = 3.635; p = 0.028; η² = 0.033].
Discussion and Conclusion: In conclusion, it was determined that nurses' job satisfaction levels did not
differ significantly according to gender, education level, marital status, alcohol use, type of employment,
and association membership; however, they did differ significantly according to age, smoking, unit of
employment, workload, job satisfaction, desire to continue in the profession, and length of service.
When the effect sizes were examined, it was observed that the job satisfaction variable had a very large
effect size; the desire to continue in the profession variable had a large effect size; the workload and
length of service variables had a moderate effect size; and the smoking, alcohol use, type of employment,
age, and unit of employment variables had a small effect size.
