The aim in this investigation is to define the degree of textuality in the speech of six-year-old Turkish children. For this reason, the introduction and conclusion parts of their speech were investigated. Additionally, the rate and accuracy degree of pronoun use which is another sign for a text showing the relation within sentences has been focused in the investigation. The participants of the research were 24 six-year-old students in a pre-school in Antalya, Turkey. The data was collected by making the participants speak about some story cards prepared in advance. This operation was repeated for the second time in the following week using a set of different story cards. All the speech was recorded and analyzed through the content analysis technique. The texts were evaluated by two raters for their conformity. The records were analyzed to see whether they include linguistic items functioning as introduction and conclusion, and to see whether the correlation was clear between the pronouns and what they referred to. The findings showed that there were introduction parts in only eight records of speech and only conclusions in only nine. All the participants used a total of 1217 pronouns. Most of the things referred by those pronouns were vague or not understandable. As a result, it was understood that the textual degree in language acquisition of six-year-old children was not at the intended level. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
