Objective: The main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of allergic asthma, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis in individuals older than 16 years of age registered in three primary health clinics of Antalya. Material and Methods: This research was conducted between March 1-May 31,2007, in the shanty house region of Antalya with new apartment blocks, in the area covered by three primary health clinics. The questionnaire was prepared by the researchers based on information in the literature and SFAR and ISAAC surveys. Interviews were conducted face-to-face with particpants in the house by pollsters that had been educated before. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences-SPSS program. Results: In this research 1445 were surveyed. The mean age of the participants was 37.4 +/- 14.6 years, 65.7% were females, 47.2 % were housewives, and 55.6% lived in flats. Of the research participants, 8.2% had been diagnosed with asthma, 10.8% had been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, and 7.5% had been diagnosed with an allergic eye disease. Among 250 people who had a diagnosis of allergic asthma, rhinitis or conjunctivitis, 85 (34.0%) had an allergy test done and of these 51.8% were found to be allergic to house dust, 42.3% to pollen, and 5.9% to house dust and pollen. It was seen that allergic rhinitis was the most common allergic disorder and those who live in shanty type houses and housewives had asthma more frequently (p< 0.001). Conclusion: It is recommended that those with allergic diseases must be educated by health care personnel and that necessary follow-up and tests should be performed.
