Özet

Various traffic calming applications, that are able to reduce vehicle speeds, traffic problems (accidents, congestion, etc.), and related externalities, are in practice in the USA and UK. They also provide aesthetics in streets and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. While these traffic calming schemes are effectively used in the developed countries, unfortunately, in Turkey their use is partial and mistakes are made in thee implementation, hence the intended benefits are not fully achieved. In the present paper however it has been highlighted, with reasons, that only the vertical traffic calming applications are known in Turkey and the necessary critical information about the horizontal traffic calming devices are given. By means of this, authorities in the country, who are in charge of road safety and speed management, are encouraged to adapt horizontal instead of vertical speed reducers. Besides, within the scope of the paper, it was attempted to close the gap in the literature through the wide range of coverage of especially the horizontal traffic calming material.
