Abstract

One of the common interests of religion and philosophy is prayer (dua). Prayer has become the subject or issue of many different fields such as theology, morality and psychology because of its aspect that related God and man. When evaluated in terms of the God-man relationship, it is clear that prayer has a belief (tawhid), practical (amal) and moral (akhlaq) dimensions for both sides. Therefore, what is the nature of prayer? Is prayer simply the linguistic appeal of man to the transcendental being and is it static activity in this respect? What should be done before praying? Answers to be given to such questions are important for the emergence of the three dimensions mentioned. In this article, within the framework of the above questions, the approach of Islamic theology and philosophy to prayer from the perspective of two significant thinkers of the tenth century such as Maturidi and Amiri will be evaluated.
