Child Indicators Research, 2025 (SSCI)
This study aims to investigate the relationship between child neglect and family protective factors in Hatay, a region in Türkiye characterized by high migration rates, cultural diversity, and socio-economic disadvantage. A total of 936 parents of children aged 6–15 participated in the study, completing the Individual Information Form, the Multidimensional Neglectful Behavior Scale-Parent Form, and the Inventory of Family Protective Factors. The analyses were conducted separately for children aged 6–9 and 10–15, as each developmental period involves different caregiving needs and the measurement tools used in the study were structured in two distinct forms to reflect these age-specific requirements. The findings revealed a negative correlation between family protective factors and reported neglectful parenting behaviors. Stepwise regression analyses showed that for parents of children aged 6–9, neglect was predicted by lower protective factors, low income, male gender, and non-Turkish nationality. For the 10–15 age group, predictors also included low education level and older parental age. These results underscore the importance of family-level protective factors in understanding child neglect, especially in disadvantaged, multicultural regions. By addressing both risk and resilience, the study contributes to a more context-sensitive understanding of neglect and highlights the need for family-centered, preventive interventions in similar socio-cultural settings.
