Abstract
This article examines the inscriptions engraved on the interior cella walls of the ichthyomantic oracle of Apollo Surios/Sozon at Sura in Lycia. The study introduces two newly discovered inscriptions, revises the four published inscriptions, and reinterprets two others, thereby reassessing the function and cultic context of the sanctuary. It is proposed that names such as Helioserapis and Zeus Atabyrios, previously interpreted as independent deities worshipped in the temple, are ship names. This reveals the existence of an euploia (fair voyage) tradition at the sanctuary and emphasizes that the oracular center also served as a protective harbor for sailors navigating the hazardous Lycian coast. Furthermore, the study re-examines the mnesthe (commemoration) and hileos (divine mercy) formulae inscribed within the temple. In this context, the topographical and historical applications of the names Sozon and Apollo Surios are detailed. Contrary to theories suggesting the temple was abandoned due to a tsunami, it is argued that these inscriptions were carved during the temple’s active use, either with the authorization of the priests or by their own hands. Finally, these new findings propose a comprehensive reconstruction of the social, religious, and maritime dynamics of the Sura oracle.
