Abstract
In literature three types of minorities has been mentioned; autonomous, immigrant, and involuntary. In addition, there are resident foreigners living in Turkey, majority came from developed countries. In Alanya 22 thousand foreigners live from 90 different countries. The purpose of this study is to determine the educational problems of the resident foreigners’ children studying in Turkish schools in Alanya and to derive out some solutions. Qualitative research method was adopted for the study. The study group was 118 foreign parents whose
children attend Turkish schools in Alanya in 2012-13 session. The research data was collected with an open-ended questionnaire. The paper is given in English, German, Russian and Turkish. 53 of the parents have written the problems their students experienced and suggested solutions. The responses were analyzed with the content analysis method and they were classified into five categories as; problems related with language (Turkish), problems related with teachers, problems related with other (Turkish) children, problems related with parent-school cooperation and general educational problems not related with being a foreigner. The study showed that the main problem of the foreign children is the language (Turkish) problem. There are few adaptation problems involving teachers and other (Turkish) children. Lack of enough communication between the parents and school management is another problem. More than half of the parents did not mention any problem which shows that they are satisfied with the schools. Considering the results it has been recommended that Turkish language courses should be organized for the students and parents, information about school activities and students’ performance should be given to parents on their language and they should be included into school management. The teachers working with the foreign students should be given training. Some cultural activities should be organized to integrate the foreign and Turkish students.
