THE USE OF VIRTUAL REALITY IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY NURSING AND MIDWIFERY POSTGRADUATE THESES IN TURKEY

The aim of this study is to systematically review virtual reality (VR) applications in postgraduate theses related to Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing and Midwifery in Turkey. This retrospective and descriptive study includes theses from master’s and doctoral programs that investigated VR applications in these fields, published in Turkish or English, and whose full texts were accessible. The literature review was conducted from August 15-22, 2024, using “virtual reality” as the search keyword in both languages in the Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center database, with no time frame restrictions. A total of 1090 theses with the keyword in Turkish and 261 in English were accessed. After reviewing titles and abstracts, 21 theses suitable the inclusion criteria were selected. The first thesis on this topic was published in 2019. Among the 21 theses, 13 were focused on Midwifery (eight doctoral and five master’s) and eight on Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing (five doctoral and three master’s). All were randomized controlled studies. The theses explored various VR applications, including pregnancy, NST procedures, threatened preterm labor, cesarean delivery, normal labor, episiotomy repair, pelvic examinations, hysterosalpingography, daytime gynecological surgeries, dysmenorrhea, and midwifery education. The use of VR in these fields is growing in Turkey, particularly in education and clinical applications. Increased research and application of VR in a broader range of areas could significantly enhance healthcare services. Therefore, further comprehensive studies on the effectiveness and long-term impacts of VR applications are recommended.
