Marie de France lived in 12th century Europe as a poet who foreshadowed the early Renaissance with her
presence as a poet and writer. Living under the patronage of Henry II, Marie lived with and wrote for the courtesans
as a writer of secular topics such as love, morals, and social status. However, her writing differs from many of her
contemporaries because she focuses on her characters' inner worlds. Despite this list of topics, Marie writes about
Muslims in only one of her narratives, namely, A Story Beyond the Sea. Saracens and Salâhaddîn appear with
interesting yet powerful connotations in this particular narrative. In this study, this specific narrative is analyzed
to shed light on the image of the Muslim. While doing that, relevant features of the history of Medieval Europe
are discussed with this narrative's overall content. It is concluded that Sultan Salâhaddîn appears as an important
figure in this story.
