Tolkien’s trilogy of The Lord of the Rings is considered as one of the milestones in fantasy literature. The success of creating his own mythology paved the way for the popularity of the trilogy as well as studying the text in terms of various aspects none of which can be realized without discussing the text in relation to mythology. Some of the mythological elements he employed in The Lord of the Rings are elves and dwarfs that are included in Nordic and Celtic mythologies. The aim of this study is to analyze The Lord of the Rings by focusing on the mythological characters that Tolkien created so as to portray his major characters as popular deities. While doing that, important characters, places and objects are represented as referents of specific races and creatures that can be seen in other mythological texts as well.
