This article examines the sexual upbringing of children in Ottoman society using a lexicographical approach, tracing the process from the 12th-century bahnâme tradition to 19th-century medical literature. By tracing concepts such as "istimnâ‘ bi’l-yed", "hırs-ı şehvânî" and "tecessüs" within their textual contexts, the research reveals the process of medicalisation, wherein sexuality shifted from a traditional ‘balance’-centred understanding to being defined in the 19th century as a ‘disease’ that weakens the will. This transformation, brought about by the medicalisation of terms, signifies a profound shift not only in discourse but also in law, sociology, pedagogy, and the regulation of emotions. This study examines the term ‘istimnâ’ (masturbation) within the frameworks of Michel Foucault’s concept of discipline and Norbert Elias’s perspectives on shame and self-control, discussing how the implicit discourse found in traditional texts has given way, with modernisation, to a new regime of affect (a history of emotions) regulated by scientific authority (medicine and pedagogy). Furthermore, by highlighting the process through which social structure is inscribed into the body and social memory (habitus), the study demonstrates how sexual life is situated within discourses of fertility for women, authority for men, and innocence and discipline for children. By evaluating the conceptual frameworks surrounding the practice of istimnâ‘ within their historical contexts, the article maps out the terms that express the thoughts, practices, and emotions underpinning the fields of law, sociology, and pedagogy, and which help to explain them all. It explains how, with modernisation, sexual education for children was re-established along the axes of scientific discipline, self-control, and shame, and how the child’s sexual autonomy was restricted, using the practice of istimnâ‘ as a lens.
