Body mass index was used as an index to evaluate nutritional status. Standard body mass index reference values cannot be used for all nations. Body mass index reference values vary between countries and even between different regions of a country. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of body mass index values for children aged 7-15 years in Gaziantep region, Turkey. The weight and height of 2,375 primary and secondary school children chosen with systematic sampling method were measured and their body mass index values were calculated using the formula [weight (kg)/height 2 (m)]. Our sample is representative for the urban area of Gaziantep province. The body mass index values of the children were calculated and the mean, standard deviation and percentile values (5, 10, 15, 50, 75, 85, and 95) of the body mass index values of 7-15-years old children were evaluated by age and sex.
