Özet

Among various online communities, individuals interested in the medieval world maintain Instagram accounts to share information and knowledge about artifacts from that era. This growing interest is significant because the term “medieval” represents a problematic construct in contemporary popular contexts; many people’s assumptions about the medieval world often stem from misconceptions. For many, the Middle Ages continues to be viewed as a period defined by torture, ugliness, religious dogma, oppression, and, of course, filth. This perception similarly overlooks the widespread charity of the medieval period, extensive discussions on beauty, abundant artwork, and scientific endeavors, supportive spaces, and various activities that exemplify non-religious daily life, such as carnivals, public baths, and the use of perfume. Hence, the central goal of this present study is to understand how contemporary people conceive and process the medieval world, especially in online spaces like Instagram.
