Perpetrators are the individuals that have to restrict or adjourn their freedom and potential opportunities for a while. The right to education is not included in this restriction. The right to education is a basic civil right grounded on the human dignity and respect for personality. Yet, education programmes for prisoners, from an instrumental perspective, aim to rehabilitate individual by means of education, to prevent the risk of recidivism, and to integrate the imprisoned individual into the community. College education for prisoners brings to mind of basic education, mass education, distance education, and professional education programmes. This study, however, specifically focuses on the prisoner students in higher education programmes which are offered only for the imprisoned individuals in the open prison institutions. Thus, it aims to determine and understand the educational motives of prisoner students their experiences during education, the personal change and transformation and finally the problems they encounter throughout their educational process. In line with this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight prisoner students. The content analysis method was utilised for the analysis of the data, which revealed that the prisoner students in higher education programmes receive education to abstain from the pains stemming from the state of incarceration, to catch up with life and to take the second chance granted to them to increase their prospects for employment, to use their time efficiently, and to pay off debts to society and family.
