Özet

When a country uses imported inputs in the manufacturing of a good it exports, the exporting country becomes vertically specialized. The goal of this study is to compare the vertical specialization ratios of the five sectors that Turkey exports the most, as well as to assess the potential consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on these sectors' and Turkey's global trade. The usage of imported inputs in the major exporting industries and total Turkish exports is highlighted using vertical specialization ratios calculated in the research, and remedies are suggested to lessen dependence on imported inputs. According to the findings of the quarterly data analysis, Turkey's reliance on imported inputs has increased both on a sectoral and overall basis in the 2018-2020 period. On the other hand, although the machinery industry is identified as having the highest foreign added value in exports, the textile sector is identified as having the lowest foreign input ratio in exports. Furthermore, even though the vertical specialization ratios of total exports declined in the second quarter of 2020 due to the pandemic-related slowdown in exports, this trend was reversed in the last quarter of the year and accelerated upwards again.
