Abstract

This study aims to bring a new perspective to spatial risk assessments by using multi-criteria decision analysis and geographic information systems for classifying leakage risk in Mersin Akkuyu and Sinop Nuclear Power Plants (Turkey). Experts identifed the criteria (roads, farmland, residential areas, water, trees, crops, bare land, altitude, wind speed). Based on these criteria, datasets were prepared: land use land cover, wind speed, digital elevation model, and roads. In the resulting leak risk maps, 9.79% (300.52 km2 ) of the total study area in Mersin-Akkuyu was classifed as very high risk, and 16.48% (505.74 km2 ) as high risk. In Sinop, 16.89% (477.70 km2 ) of the total study area was classifed as very high risk, and 20.2% (571.26 km2 ) as high risk.
