StripeRust Symposium Regional Cereal Rust, 2014
The cereal production area in Northern Cyprus is 86,830 ha; barley occupies 80,400 ha while wheat and oats cover 5,750 ha and 680 ha, respectively. Surveys were conducted in Northern Cyprus in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 to determine the importance of cereal leaf diseases. In the first and second years, 142 and 96 fields were examined between the milk and dough stages, (Zadoks 61-79). Diseases presence, incidences and severities were recorded. Wheat stripe rust, barley stripe rust, stem rust on wheat and barley, barley leaf rust, wheat leaf rust, and oat crown rust were all recorded, but at relatively low levels. In the vegetation growth period between November to May average climate data were: precipitation 439 mm, temperature 14.8°C and relative humidity 67%. We concluded that the rusts do not cause significant losses in Northern Cyprus.
