Dekalog’da (1988) Krzysztof Kieslowski, On Emir’i, 1980’li yılların Polonya’sının günlük yaşamından
hikayeler aracılığıyla, on bölümlük bir dizi ile ele alır. Ancak, dinden çok,
varoluşsal boyutları öne çıkarır. Dekalog
II’de (Kieslowski, 1989) karakterler darlık, acı,
hastalık ve ölüm karşısında sürekli varoluşsal kaygıyla boğuşurlar. Kieslowski
In Dekalog (1988), Krzysztof
Kieslowski discusses the Ten Commandments in a series of ten episodes, through
stories from the everyday life of Poland in the 1980s. However, it highlights
existential dimensions rather than religion. In Dekalog II (Kieslowski,
1989), characters struggle with constant existential
anxiety in the face of obstruction, pain, disease, and death. For Kieslowski,
looking at our anxious state is a way to approach human reality. He places his
characters in various impossibilities and forces them to make existential
choices. On the ground of existential anxiety, he reinterprets the moral rules
imposed by the religious commandments through an ethical perspective. He
produces thoughts in ethical context around the question What is the right
action to take? This paper aims to produce a philosophical criticism of the
movie Dekalog II within the framework of the concept of existential anxiety.
The method of philosophical criticism focuses on the work itself and questions
its message. It discusses human relations, opportunities for experience and
action, and ethical values highlighted by the work as well as the meanings
produced by them. It assumes that the concept of existential anxiety will shed
a light on the film and form a basis for its philosophical criticism. The first
part defines the concepts of anxiety and existential anxiety, the second part
looks into how Dekalog II reflects existential anxiety through the main
characters, and the last part attempts a philosophical criticism of the film.
In conclusion, the most important ethical value in Dekalog II is not to harm
others or to care for them. Kieslowski favors ethical values in his film; his
goal is to point out and expand human ethical possibilities. Ethical action in Dekalog
II is a potentiality that matures with existential anxiety and can be reached
with the attitude of showing scrupulousness to being. It is thought
that this research will contribute to
the literature in terms of the original connections between Kieslowski cinema,
the concept of existential anxiety, and philosophical criticism.
